2008 Top Record Lists

In my time off, I took a look at a handful of website's best of 2008 lists. All in all, I looked at 11 websites - everything from Rolling Stone to Stereogum (for a full list see below*). I know Metacritic does something similar but they don't have stereogum and I've never heard of their top 3 albums.

I've pasted a chart that shows the 39 albums that were on 4 more lists (there were 99 on 2 more lists and over 200 made at least 1 list). Here's what I learned...

There was a clear top 3: TV on the Radio, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver.
- TVotR was on every list in the to three on 6 lists, got the #1 spot on 3 lists and had an average ranking of 8.8.
- Fleet Foxes was on 10 lists, in the top three on 5, got top billing in 4 and had an average ranking of 5.3. The only list that did not have the Fleet Foxes was Blender.
- Bon Iver was officially on 10 lists (they were not on Pitchfork's list this year, because they were on the list for 2007), and had 2 top 3s and a

The next 3 to stick out:
- Vampire Weekend (10 mentions, 2 top 3s, avg rank of 6.4)
- Lil Wayne (8 mentions, 1 #1, 3 top 3s)
- Portishead (8 mentions, 2 top 3s)

The rest of the top top 10 (all with 8 mentions)
- The Hold Steady (avg rank of 19)
- Santgold (avg rank of 21)
- Nick Cave (avg rank of 22)
- Hot Chip (avg rank of 24)

While the above list doesn't really surprise me, there were some surprises:
- While the MMJ album was sorta panned (pitchfork rated it 4.7, metacritic score of 70) it actually did rather well - it showed up on 7 lists and had an avg score of ~17
- AC/DC (3 mentions), Metallica (5 mentions), John Mellencamp (2 mentions), and GNR (2 mentions) were seemingly better received than the Raveonettes, Yeasayer, Why? (all 1 mention) and the Ting Tings (no mentions).
- I expected She and Him (only 3 mentions) and the Black Keys (5 mentions, but avg rank of 31) to be better received.
Here is the list, below.
